Member Of The Month – February
Our February MOTM is the one and only Laura Head. She is constantly working hard, turning up to zoo classes and putting in the work. She is a ray of light on every session and we are lucky to have such a kind hearted and fun member of our community. Below is a few words in Laura’s own words as she details her experience so far.
How long have you been Training at District L for?
About 10 months I think. I started doing some of the limited kit workouts during the first lockdown just to fill the time, really enjoyed them so started going to classes once the gyms were allowed to open up again and I’ve been hooked since!
What class time do you normally attend and why does that work for you?
Controversial opinion but I’m a big fan of the 6am class during the week. It’s such a good way to start the day. Depending on what comes up at work I never really know when my day will finish so I like to get in early to make sure I get it done.
I also love the Saturday morning classes – nothing like a partner work out and some party tunes to get the weekend started!
What do you like most about District L?
I don’t even know where to start with this one!
The coaches are just second to none. I’d never done CrossFit or any kind of weightlifting before I started but George, Lee, Cas and Morgan are so patient and great at breaking things down and scaling movements so I never feel out of my depth or unsure of myself during any of the workouts – even the scary looking ones! They are the biggest and best cheerleaders you could ask for. The members are also the best bunch of people going! You couldn’t find a more welcoming or friendly group. Our Saturday night zoom sessions have been the highlight of Lockdown 3.0!
I also love the philosophy behind District L, it’s completely changed the relationship I have with fitness and exercise. Before I started at DL my only focus whenever I worked out was on losing weight so it was easy to become demotivated when there wasn’t a holiday or something around the corner that I wanted to look a certain way for. Nothing at DL is based on how you look which is such a breath of fresh air; it’s all about your overall health and pushing yourself to work at the best of your ability. It makes for such a positive atmosphere and I feel so much better for being part of it – instead of exercising to change the way I look or to reach a number on the scales, now I do it to work towards new goals so it’s become a genuine hobby and something I that love to do instead of a means to an end.
What is your why? Why do you put yourself through it each day?
Because it makes me feel good. Actually it makes me feel great! It doesn’t matter what kind of day I’m having or what else might be going on, when I get in the gym I forget about everything else and always feel so much more positive when I leave. I get to challenge myself every day surrounded by a great group of people and I’m always surprised at what I can actually do.
Plus with everywhere else being closed for most of the year, dancing around between sets is pretty much as close as I get to a night out these days!
Do you have goals you want to achieve?
So many! That’s one of my favourite things about CrossFit – there’s always something you can improve on. I’d love to get my first competition in the bag this year and I want to improve my gymnastic movements as well. TTB and pull ups by Summer!
What advice would you give anyone wanting to start * but is either unsure or nervous? We get people all the time saying they need to get fit first or they could never do what we do? Any advice for those people?
I used to be one of these people and my biggest regret is that I didn’t start sooner. There’s this big perception that CrossFit is only for people that can throw huge weights around or run for hours on end but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The classes at DL are the most diverse I’ve ever been to because there is nothing that can’t be scaled to your ability. So my advice would be to get yourself down to the gym and give it a try.
What is your biggest achievement so far in CrossFit and what are you most proud of?
My proudest moment is definitely this! A year or so ago I couldn’t have imagined getting so much enjoyment from the gym – walking to and from the bar was about all the exercise I ever used to do so to go from that to this is amazing. I used to see people doing these workouts and think it could never be me but the fact that I get myself through them 4/5 times a week and look forward to doing it is a huge achievement.
